“Trade policy is about setting rules on a global scale...to do that well, we need to gather information from academic research obviously, but also from those who work on implementation, application and practitioners.”

Dr Hanna C. Norberg is an independent researcher and trade policy advisor and the founder of TradeEconomista.com.

“I started TradeEconomista because I needed an affiliation that was supple enough to allow me to work with--and connect--all the dots needed to make informed decisions about trade policy. Trade policy is about setting rules on a global scale for firms to trade and people to earn their living. To do that well, we need to gather information from academic research obviously, but also from those who work on implementation, application and practitioners. I am curious by nature and a big picture thinker and was baffled by how often in this profession we focus on single issues without having spent time asking the fundamental questions first before embarking on analysis/finding answers/making decisions. Questions like “why exactly are we interested in this? what are we really trying to accomplish with this exercise? how do we go about finding that out? what would move the needle here? who would know the answer to that? what data is available? what are the questions we really should be asking? are there any red herrings?” and so on are crucial to the work that I do.

Ben is a kindred curiosity driven spirit and someone whose work I have admired to a long time. When he reached out and asked if I’d like to collaborate on forming TPRForum, I was honoured -and thrilled.

As independent researchers, we both have had the privilege of working with a plethora of brilliant experts and this forum gives us the chance to-- not only continue the conversations amongst ourselves-- but also with the help of technology expand the circle to others who also want to join in on the fun”
